Important report published by the CNRS

The Synthesis of the Collective Scientific Expertise on Rare Earths has been made public.

This CNRS initiative, aimed at establishing the state of scientific knowledge on the use of rare earths throughout their entire life cycle, was carried out by a multidisciplinary group of around thirty scientists, including members of the CenTRA association.

Three approches were examined:

• reducing their use through substitution in materials or through more frugal consumption of products containing them;
• recycling them by exploiting the “urban mine”;
• extracting them differently, using more sustainable methods and alternative sources of supply.

This assessment is poised to provide robust scientific foundations to inform public debate and decision-making.
